This is kind of a funny way to post about and recount a weekend, actually, because all of this was on Friday. I tried to cram way too much into that day and completely messed up the first part of the show, actually.
Oh, right, "the Super Bowl" is in the title - did you think I was actually going to write about that in detail, or that I might have watched it? Hahah.. sorry, no.
My day started in Meßberg which, like most of Hamburg, is full of
beautiful and dramatic doorways that I like notice and appreciate.
These kinds of detail tiles, for example, are everywhere - there are fish, ships, city crests, mermaids, etc. - but this one is kind of unique. It's Pan, right? Possibly Bacchus?
These three are, of course, all the same door. I'm not sure if the blue was intentionally added later, or if the tiles are made like that, or if the building was scorched by fire. Neat, huh?
Walking toward the Rathaus, because I wanted to go to the craft store in the Europa Passage mall for a couple of specific things, I spotted a few nice slaps, and also a small demonstration.
I took one crummy picture and a video clip of what, at the time, I called a "cute little baby protest", because it was a pretty small group of schoolkids and their teachers demanding action for the environment and in the face of climate change, in small voices that didn't even make it the short distance from their group to the City Hall they were facing and at which they were directing these demands. At this point I had no idea that Fridays for Future was a thing, or that it was connected to Greta Thunberg. This was the first of February; a subsequent post exactly one calendar month later will show you the kind of momentum this gained.
Appropriate! Roter Aufbau is a communist organisation.
The craft store was full of adorable and totally unnecessary temptations, all of which I resisted bravely. ... Actually, a big part of the reason for that is that crafting items and supplies are super expensive in Germany, even things for kids! Why?!
Oh nooo ;o;
lol
From there I went to the mall food court which, you will not be surprised to hear, I'm sure, I ended up regretting. The teenagers were apparently completely done with their day at this point, too, apparently: they surrounded me, eating, drinking soda, and chatting, with their protest signs leaned up against their tables and chairs. Since I didn't realise Fridays for Future was even a thing, as I said, I had no idea that participating classes and schools got the day off.
I ended up trying the " " " Mexican " " " food place because it smelled good and I was really hungry and anyone reading this knows what it's like for me to find something to eat. WELL.
Getting spattered with fake blood was also great: the entire train ride home, no one even considered sitting near me! This tactic would probably lose its lustre and cause additional problems if employed on a regular basis, but I think it's a pretty good life hack.
